Aims of the course:To acquaint students with extensive forms of fruit trees, their economic and non-productive significance, with respect of their utilization in landscape architecture and in the areas with special regime of management. Practical pomological determination of obsolete varieties and landraces, establishment of standard orchards and their subsequent maintenance.
Course contents:
1.Introduction (allowance 6/0)
 
a.Economic and non-productive function of fruit trees, old varieties and landraces. The origin of the fruit species, gene centers.
b.Botanical and horticultural classification of fruit species, anatomical and morphological characteristics, ecological requirements.
c.Importance of fruit trees in landscape, preservation of endangered and disappearing varieties, growing in marginal areas.

2.Nursery production and planting of extensive orchards. (allowance 6/0)
 
a.Propagation and growing of nursery plants
b.Planting of extensive orchards (principles and agro-technology)
c.Note: subsidy for combined form of study - 4

3.Growth and development of fruit trees (allowance 6/0)
 
a.Whole life cycle (age periods), phenological stages.
b.The importance and methods of pruning: educational pruning of young trees, maintenance pruning, rejuvenating pruning of old trees.
c.Agrotechnical principles in extensive plantations, maintenance of old plantations, pests and diseases management of fruit trees.
d.Note: subsidy for combined form of study - 5

4.Pomology (allowance 6/0)
 
a.General pomology - distinguishing characters of fruit species and varieties (morphological characteristics, habit of tree canopy, external and internal characteristics of fruits).
b.Particular pomology of apples, pears, plums, prunes, sweet cherries and sour cherries.
c.Less common fruit species - their importance, growing requirements and possibilities of utilization.
d.Note: subsidy for combined form of study - 5

Specific competences:
 
-Ability of taking care of the trees based on their physiology
-Competence to establish, maintain and restore extensive fruit plantations
-Knowledge of complex pomology of landraces and obsolete varieties of fruit species and skill of using the varieties.
-Knowledge of ecological needs of woody species
-Problem solving ability
-Skill of high stem nursery production o fruit trees in CAC category of propagating material.
-Skills to grow fruit crops in low input system using functional biodiversity
-Understanding of tree properties based on its anatomical structure

Assessment methods:The course is finished elaboration of semester work and then exam (written and oral).
The oral exam takes about 30 minutes and a student answers three randomly drawn questions from following topics: 1) general part, 2) agrotechnics of extensive orchards, 3) pomology - use of old varieties.
