Aims of the course:Course objectives: In this course, students will learn how to understand the ambient world from the systems point of view. They will be able to understand causes of the present condition of the environment and principles of possible remedies. They also will learn about global environmental problems and their causes. Basing on a detailed study of essential environmental components they will acquire advanced skills how to solve both regional and local problems and how to remove causes of environmental pollution. After finishing this course, they will be able to use information about techniques and technologies of cleaning of individual environmental components (including problems concerning waste management). They should be able to work independently and use modern preventive measures and tools of environmental protection within the framework of sustainable production, consumption, and social life. When applying environmental and economic principles and factors of environmental protection, they will also be able to take responsibility when deciding in adequate working situations.
Course contents:
1.History of environmental protection (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Philosophic and religious causes of the current environmental situation, evolution of our approach to environmental protection, reactive and proactive approaches.

2.Basic environmental components -- water (allowance 4/4)
 
a.Hydrosphere, basic terms and parameters, European Water Charter, polluting factors, role of water in nutrition of humans and animals.
b.Drinking and service water, water treatment and purification, technologies and facilities.

3.Basic environmental components -- atmosphere (allowance 4/4)
 
a.Atmosphere, basic terms and parameters, polluting factors
b.Dissemination of pollutants, methods of emissions purification, technologies and facilities.
c.Physical pollution -- noise, ionizing radiation, electromagnetic radiaation, vibrations, heat and light pollution

4.Basic environmental components -- soil (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Pedosphere and rock environment, European Soil Carter, basic terms and parameters, pollutants, effect of agricultural activities on pedosphere, environmental effects of mining activities.

5.Wastes (allowance 4/4)
 
a.Catalogue and categorisation of waste materials, solid, liquid and gaseous wastes, industrial wastes, solid municipality waste, waste materials in agriculture, forestry, and veterinary practice.
b.biomass, biogas, methods of treatment, recycling and liquidation of wastes, packages.

6.Prevention of waste production and pollution -- cleaner methods of production (allowance 2/2)
 
a.History of cleaner production in the Czech Republic, basic terms, project of cleaner production and its individual stages, environmental and economic parameters of cleaner production projects.

7.Legal framework of environmental care (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Basic environmental legislation, governmental authorities, NGO, proposed and prepared legislation, grants and governmental programmes, EIA, IPPC.

8.Fundamentals of ecology, nature and landscape (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Explanation of basic terms and concepts, ecological abiotic and biotic factors, populations, biocoenosis, ecosystem, biome. Bioaccumulation, food chains. Development of living organisms and Man position in the biosphere.
b.. Current situation in nature protection, protected territories and national parks, zoological gardens. Participation of public in care about protected territories.

9.Food industry and agriculture (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Basic parameters and problems of working environment in agriculture and food industry, hygiene.
Organic farms, organic food, legal and consumer environment in the Czech Republic. Biotechnologies -- processing of agricultural and alimentary wastes.

10.Sustainable development (allowance 4/4)
 
a.Global environmental problems , ecological crisis, global population explosion, water and food supply, communication with public, local agenda 21, healthy towns and cities, factor four and factor ten, sustainability indicators, sustainable agriculture.
b.Tools of sustainable development, voluntary agreements, EMS, EMAS, LCA, eco-labelling, environmental profile, benchmarking, safety certificates, HACCP, IPPC, ecological audit, environmental policy

Work placement:There is no compulsory work placement in the course unit.

Assessment methods:A 20-minute written test at the end of the semester at 12 weeks. For credit, it is necessary to get at least 12 points out of 20 (60%). Another condition is to submit a seminar paper at the latest seminar.

Completion of the course: Final written exam of lectures, seminars and documents in UIS for 60 minutes. The minimum exit requirement is a 60% gain, ie 12 points out of 20 (12 = E, 13-14 = D, 15-16 = C, 17-18 = B, 19-20 = A).
