Aims of the course:To allow students to gain a deeper understanding about the biology and ecology of weeds, the development and formation of weed communities, the issue of plant expansion and the spread of foreign types of weeds, as well as the economic significance of weeds. Furthermore, students gain skills in identifying crops, seeds, and types of weeds that geminate. Students will be able to evaluate and judge the weed infestation of crop growth.
Course contents:
1.The history and origin of weeds, agrophytocenosis (allowance 6/0)
 
a.Weed population, its dynamics and composition
b.Weed communities
c.Weed infestation of individual crops
d.Crops as weeds

2.The economic significance of weeds. Harmfulness and usefulness of weeds (allowance 2/0)
3.Biology of weeds - reproduction, spread, dormancy, germination in stages (allowance 2/1)
4.Ecology of weeds - influence of the environment and human activity on weeds (allowance 2/0)
5.Evolution of weeds - development of weed communities, foreign spreading weeds, plant spread, rare weeds (allowance 2/0)
6.Division of weeds. Characteristics of individual types of weeds (allowance 6/1)
7.Weed identification methods (allowance 2/0)
8.Current weed infestation - identification of weeds that germinate (allowance 0/6)
9.Potencial weed infestation -- recognition of crops and weed seeds (allowance 0/4)
10.Field exercises (allowance 0/7)

-The ability to assess intensity of weed infestation ant to understand harmfulness of weeds and relations in agrofytocoenosis

Assessment methods:Credit -- submission of 2 protocols from seminars, knowledge of determination of fruits and seeds of weeds (success rate 80 %), knowledge of weed seedlings determination (success rate 80 %), compulsory attendance in field exercise
Final examn -- submission of seminar work, oral examination (3 questions, identification of weed species).
