Aims of the course:The aim of the course is to gain theoretical knowledge in the field of agrobiological, agroecological and technical disciplines in order to master modern technologies of growing, harvest and post-harvest treatment of cereals and legumes intended for diverse utilization ways. Students will be acquainted with the principles and norms of commodities evaluation and their marketing. Students will acquire information on the present status and development trends in the plant production in the CR and abroad.
Course contents:
1.Characteristics of plants growing as a scientific discipline and sector of agriculture. (allowance 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a.Present status, objectives and goals, development trends, scientific aspects of development.
b.Integrated plant production, alternative approaches, organic farming.

2.Production ecology. (allowance 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a.Classification and regionalization of crops.
b.Yield creation of field crops, regulation, and production process control

3.Cereals. (allowance 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a.Importance, use, biological and agrotechnical characteristics.
b.Growth and development, evaluation criteria, micro and macrofenology

4.Yield creation of cereals. (allowance 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a.Biological and economic yield.
b.Yield structure, regulation of yield parameters.

5.Overwintering of cereals, lodging. (allowance 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a.Analysis of effects causing yield reduction and quality decrease of production.

6.Basic procedures for growing major cereal species including harvest and postharvest treatments with the focus on the production purpose. (allowance 2/2) (allowance 2/2)
a.Winter wheat, spring wheat, hard wheat, spelt.
b.Rentability of growing, commercial aspects.

a.Biological characteristics, specificities of growth and development.
b.Agroecological requirements, status and importance of legumes within the structure of crops, economic and ecological aspects, legumes in regard to nodule bacteria.

12.Basic growing procedures of major legumes species. (allowance 6/6) (allowance 6/6)
a.Specificity of harvest and postharvest treatment
b.Pea, bean, bob, lupine, lentils, soya bean.

Specific competences:
- The ability to solve the problems of cultivation and harvest of cereals and legumes with regard to quality
-Students will be able to orient themselves in the quality control standards of individual commodities.
-Students will be able to analyze information obtained within the process of agrobiological control and suggest relevant agrotechnical measures.
-Students will be able to evaluate the economics of grain crops with regard to the utilization of the production

Assessment methods:The requirements for passing the course are at least 75% attendance in the seminars (excursion), elaboration of project and its defence, a successful completion of the final written test and oral exam. The test will be composed of questions on the topics covered in the lectures and seminars and the students will have 30 minutes to complete the test - the minimal requirement for passing is achieving 80% of the total points attainable in test and successful completion of three questions of the oral exam.
