Aims of the course:The aim of the course is to gain knowledge of medical, aromatic and spice crops and the possibilities of their use for diverse processing areas with regard to quality. The objective is to acquire advanced knowledge that will enable critical understanding of medical and aromatic crops growing.
Students will gain complex skills necessary for growing realization with consideration to quality and broad use of these species in different processing areas. The goal is to prepare students so that they are competent to independently manage growing and processing of medical and aromatic crops prior to delivery to the final processor.
Course contents:
1.Introduction, growing development in CR and the world, legislation in regard to medical and aromatic crops. (allowance 2/0) (allowance 2/0)
2.Substances contained in medical plants and possibilities to influence them by growing treatments. Medical and aromatic plants recognition according to seeds. (allowance 2/4) (allowance 2/4)
3.Basics of pharmacognosis, active ingredients in medical and aromatic crops. (allowance 4/0) (allowance 4/0)
4.Basics of growing medical and aromatic plants for flower, leaves, roots and fruit production. (allowance 8/8) (allowance 8/8)
 
a.Characteristics of Apiaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Solanaceae, Rosaceae families and their representatives
b.Recognition of medical and aromatic plants

5.Growing technologies of species intended for pharmaceutical and industrial processing (milk thistle, rye ergot, caraway, fennel, coriander). (allowance 8/10) (allowance 8/10)
 
a.Dry, semi liquid and liquid extract, preparation of dragees and other phytopharmaceuticals.
b.Infusion, decoction, leachate and their correct preparation.

6.New species of medical and aromatic crops -- plants with stimulating effects. Evaluation criteria of a commercial product according to the Czech pharmacopoeia and public notice 331 of the food law. (allowance 4/6) (allowance 4/6)

-The ability to deal with questions of medicinal plants production, including post-harvest treatment with regard to the quality
