Aims of the course:Students will get the basic knowledge on plant development and utilisation of varieties of staple crops. They will understand the methods of seed production and seed quality testing, incl. legislation and trading. Students will master the rules of varietal multiplication and seed production and will be able to select appropriate varieties for production.

1.Basic principles of plant breeding and seed production (allowance 2/2)
2.Cultivar development according to the type of cultivar (allowance 2/2)
3.Regulatory and legal issues (allowance 2/2)
4.Cultivar registration (allowance 2/2)
5.Multiplication and seed production of lines and open-pollinated cultivars (allowance 2/2)
6.Multiplication and seed production of F1 hybrids and clonal cultivars (allowance 2/2)
7.Seed treatments (allowance 2/2)
8.Seed certification process (allowance 2/2)
9.Classes of seed (allowance 2/2)
10.Multiplication of cereals and pulses (allowance 2/2)
11.Multiplication of oil crops and root crops (allowance 2/2)
12.Production of seed potatoes (allowance 2/2)
13.A lecture given by a seed professional (allowance 2/2)
14.Excursion (allowance 2/2)

-Ability to manage seed production
-Ability to select seeds and seedlings of crop varieties for their specific use. Obtaining the basic knowledge of good practice in seed management.

-Acquiring basic knowledge of utilization of varieties of economically important crops

Assessment methods:Course is finished with an oral examination (60 %) and a seminar work about seed production of selected crop (20 %). Students have to write three laboratory reports (20 %) and participate in one excursion. Students have to understand the basic principles of breeding, varietal multiplication and seed production. The seminars are focused on seed analyses.
