Aims of the course:To acquaint students with philosophy, objectives and principles of organic agriculture, broader theoretical knowledge of functions and relationships in agroecosystems; to acquaint with history, development and current position of organic agriculture under conditions of the Czech Republic and European Union. Acquaint students with basic legal standards valid for farming in organic agriculture; to elucidate principles of supervision and certification processes. To explain differences and specificities between conventional and organic farming, i.e. principles of plant production with emphasis on crop rotations and differences in plant nutrition, importance and main principles of farm animal breeding in relation to nutrient balance in the organic farming system, plant protection strategy in relation to approved processes and weed management. Acquaint students with productivity of organic agriculture and economic aspects of organic farming enterprises. To explain principles of bio-food production and problems of bio-food market. The aim is to teach students principles of sustainable soil management according to rules of organic agriculture applied in the EU and CR, and to acquaint them with the practice in organic agriculture so that they could elaborate a business plan for an organic farm, apply for registration as a person carrying business in organic agriculture, function as the head of an organic farm as well as other activities ensuring organic farming system (e.g. in relation to use of supporting tools for organic farming practice) including bioproduction realization. Emphasize is also put on student's ability to find innovative points in the branch and to create new steps supported by their multidiscipline knowledge. They should by able to make own decisions, to lead teams and to treat responsibly.
Course contents:
1.Philosophy, objectives, scope and definition of organic farming. History, development and current status of organic farming in the Czech Republic and EU. Organic production methods.
Multi-functional and sustainable agriculture.
Environmental effects of organic farming.
The basic legal standards of organic farming. Transition to organic farming, registration. Inspection, certification and labeling of organic agriculture.

2.The principles of organic plant production. Specifics of tillage, the importance and creation of crop rotations in organic agriculture.
Differences in plant nutrition and fertilization in organic farming system. Balance of nutrients, functions and sources of organic matter.
The strategy of plant protection against harmful agents and weed control options in organic agriculture.

3.Possibilities of organic farming in fruit growing, vegetable growing and viticulture.
The importance of livestock in organic farming and husbandry guidelines. The principle of health care, ethology, welfare.

Production level organic farming and economic aspects of farming enterprises.
Support tools in organic farming.
