Aims of the course:The aim of the course is to present overview over computer hardware and software, information and communication technologies. Students become acquainted with basic principles of computer operations and usage of computer resources. They also get practical ability to use computer networks. Successful completion of this course is a precondition for subsequent courses Computer Technology and Algorithms II and Informatics for Economists I.

2.Basics of operating systems (allowance 8/10)
 
a.Working with the Windows
b.Structure and typical features of Unix, Linux and Mac OS X.

3.Introduction into hardware resources (allowance 8/0)

c.Input/output devices

4.Introduction in computer networks (allowance 6/4)
 
a.Computer networks principles and concepts
b.Effective use of a computer network, security

5.Introduction in text processing (allowance 4/0)

Learning outcomes and competences:
Generic competences:
 
-ability to apply knowledge
-basic computing skills

-skilled at utilizing and processing information

Specific competences:
 
-Student is able to define terms: computer, algorithm, computer program, process, operating system, file, directory/folder.
-Student is able to describe the principle of recording of basic data types (number, text, sound, picture) in computer memory.
-Student is able to use the computer network safely.
-Student is able to work effectively with operating systems Windows and Linux (operations with files and processes, basic system settings).
-Student understands matters about operating systems, he knows their basic characteristics and possibilities.

Assessment methods:Written knowledge test is required. The test consists of approx. 20 questions and tasks. The student must achieve a minimum score of 75% to pass.
